  • Girls Not Acting Right
The organization name "Girls Not Acting Right" might seem unappealing at first glance, but when diving into it and seeing what GNAR is all about, it's the only name and acronym that seems fitting. Throughout history, both directly and indirectly, women have been suppressed and corralled into this box of how to act, what to look like, and what we are capable of. GNAR establishes a community where young women are allowed to push self boundaries and this will push the boundaries of society. In recent years, equality has shed some new light, but that still leaves us decades behind men. Adventure sports such as skateboarding, snowboarding, skiing, rock climbing etc. have always been male-dominated. Not that these sports aren't inclusive, but it can be intimidating for young girls and women to get started with a gap in their skill level. GNAR is all about encouraging young women at Plymouth State to do the things they're hesitant to do. Besides focusing on active sports, our club is open to many ideas to create an inclusive community. The possibilities include volunteer work such as clothing drives, trail clean-ups, building garden boxes etc. Also, there is a big art focus in GNAR. We want to give young artists the opportunity to show their work or have a relaxing evening finger-painting or tye-dying. Events are not pre-determined, but we will all work together in order to plan something we've voted on. Every member has the opportunity to propose an idea, and we will all collectively decide what we want to accomplish. The success of GNAR isn't up to a few high-ranking officers, but the participation of each and every member.
